It was not the latter. I find it not only has the relevance a practicing professional will find applicable to today's design problems, but in many ways its lessons are grounded in principles one may apply in the future. Sustainability, however one defines it, has a common denominator of timelessness. This book has that and because it is like-minded in its approach, we find solace in referencing it often. Designing the Maine Landscape ReviewThis beautiful book is part storytelling, part travel guide and part historical record and should be loved by anyone who loves Maine. It tells the story of all those places I've seen or driven by a hundred times, plus the hidden jewels that justify a special trip. This book inspires me to get in the car with book in hand to see and understand anew.
Meticulously researched and charmingly told, the book presents vast amounts of detail in a smooth style that keeps you turning page after page to get the next segment of the story. Filled with historical photos and fascinating old postcard views juxtaposed with lovely current photos by photographer Greg Currier.
This book is clearly a labor of love and the product of many, many years of careful research. It provides a public service by preserving the stories while they are still fresh for the benefit of future generations and by inspiring us to preserve and renovate these special Maine places.

Rain Gardens: Managing Water Sustainably in the Garden and Designed Landscape ReviewLet me first state that this is an excellent book. However, it is really a book about taking things to the next level. If you are looking for solid how-to information about installing a rain garden in your back yard, you might be disappointed.
Landscape architects, designers and accomplished amateurs with advanced skill sets looking to handle water both innovatively and creatively will delight in this book. I did ... but then I already have three rain gardens in my own landscape and teach how-to classes on installing them. If the concept of rain gardens intrigues you and you are looking for the basics on a DIY level, the free, downloadable rain garden manual from the University of Wisconsin is still the best source of that information, as of January 2008.
This book has a decidedly European flavor to it. And why shouldn't it? It is written by a couple of Brits. Although I am hard-pressed to see how some of the models given in the book will pass muster with the Americans with Disabilities Act, codes and other regulatory bodies, they should indeed stimulate the mind. The examples (of which there are many) also include public and even larger municipal installations. I find this a good thing for Americans to be exposed to. The Europeans are far ahead of us in green thinking. Included are some examples of essentially, municipal civil engineering projects both implemented and functioning with panache.
This is a book that I value having in my personal library. Someone looking for basic information may not.

Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards ReviewLeonard Hopper has done a tremendous job of compiling an immense amount of information that covers a broad expanse of topics relevant to landscape architecture, from site analysis to the design of zoo exhibits and everything in between. One of the book's best and most useful features is the enormous compilation of detailed construction diagrams for all sorts of site elements. To top things off, the entire book is very well organized and easy to use.
For years the only book with similar information was Time Saver Standards, which I have always found to be difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in the kind of detail I really need. Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards is a FAR better book.Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards Overview

Site Engineering for Landscape Architects ReviewPuchased this text to help review for the LARE exam. The text has all of the necessary information but is not layed out well. Illustrations are not located on pages where they are referenced in the text making it so that you have to flip back and forth across several pages to understand the text in relation to the examples.
The larger problem with the book is that the answers to Exercises are not given. You will have no way to determine if you are completing the problems correctly or not. The only way to find out will be to have them reviewed by another Landscape Architect or Engineer.
The text functions well as a reference for Landscape Architects to review formulas or storm water calculation techniques but if you are trying to use it for developing skills or for exam preperation I would not recommend it.Site Engineering for Landscape Architects Overview

Drawing Shortcuts: Developing Quick Drawing Skills Using Today's Technology ReviewThe only way Jim Leggitt could make this book better would be to package it with a quarter pound of really good chocolates. I've chosen to overlook that omission since this book is exactly what I wanted to use in my rendering classes at the Savannah College of Art & Design. This is a twenty-first century handbook for rendering in color.
Thirty-one students (two classes) proved to me this summer that Drawing Shortcuts works for learning how to make and render drawings in color quickly, effectively and relatively economically. The final projects reflect ten weeks of increasingly stronger skills and confidence in drawing/rendering abilities. Both graduate and undergraduate students with varied levels of computer expertise found value in the Drawing Shortcuts approach of "Let Technology Do Your Dirty Work".
Bottom line: a relaxed learning atmosphere in studio, fearless renderers willing to experiment with color media and striking final projects. The studio professors are commenting on the improvement in rendered drawings in their classes, too. Leggitt's methods are weaning students from a dependence on computer-generated images. The enhanced freehand drawing skills complement the computer drawing skills. Students now have many options for graphic expression which reflect their individual needs and desires.
I teach rendering classes for interior design students in the School of Building Arts at SCAD. We'll be using this book every quarter. Thanks, Jim Leggitt.
